Every St. Stephens Day the wren is hunted down by the Wren (Wran) Boys. The Wren Boys would go door to door to play music and collect money to bury the wren. This tradition suggests the ‘The Wren’ was a pariah in the community, who was hunted down and killed. The Wren at Christmas was a symbol of the year gone by (hence the burial) and the celebrating of the coming New Year.
This competition is held in early December, every year. The children are also encouraged to go out on St. Stephen’s day to their neighbours and friends with their music, songs and dance.
