Every year over 30,000 piano students throughout Ireland prepare for the annual graded musical exams. For some these exams are something to look forward to, for some others less so.

Ken Wardrop’s new documentary Making the Grade invites us into this world of the piano lesson, presenting a series of vignettes captured over seven months with teachers and their pupils as they work towards these exams.

Funded under the Arts Council’s Reel Art Scheme Making the Grade is a story of the transformative power of music and the pride and happiness it provides to both the students and teachers. This charming film is one to be enjoyed by all.
