    Highlights from Super Saturday 2018

    Highlights from Super Saturday 2018
    June 22, 2018 Dundalk BIDS

Super Saturday proved a great success again this year on the June Bank Holiday weekend with big crowds coming out to enjoy the carnival atmosphere at Market Square.

Activities on the day included an Artisan Craft and Food Market, Art in Action children’s workshops, Dundalk Town Centre ‘Customer Appreciation’ Big Prize Giveaway, Family Fun Treasure Hunt and re-enactments from the Cattle Raid of Cooley to celebrate the Táin March Festival.

Mary O’Rourke was the lucky winner of €700 worth of vouchers in the big prize giveaway and entered the competition using her receipt from a purchase made in Kevin Matthews Pharmacy on Park Street. All of the vouchers in the giveaway were sponsored by local businesses as part of Customer Appreciation Day in the town centre.

This year’s Art in Action workshops were a big hit, hosted by The Craft Rock in An Táin Arts Centre and focused on jewellery, yarn and fabric crafts and card making.

Pottery making and basket weaving demonstrations were a new addition and welcome attraction to the line-up at Market Square on the day.

The winner of the 2018 Art in Action schools competition was also announced, 25 local primary schools were invited to participate focussing on the theme ‘Dundalk – where great things happen’ and the standard of this year’s entries were exceptional. The overall winner of the competition, and a visit to Carlingford Adventure Centre for their entire class, was 11 year old Katie O’Shaughnessy Larkin from Scoil Mhuire Na nGael, Bay Estate. This fantastic prize was kindly sponsored by Carlingford Adventure Centre, an award winning family run business, and Katie and her classmates are really looking forward to their visit.

Second prize winner was Sanese Lamberga, also from Scoil Mhuire Na nGael, who won an hour-long Art & Craft workshop for her whole class with the amazing Bridge Street Studios who kindly sponsored this prize. Third place went to 13 year old Cian Duffy Hayes who is in 6th class in St. Nicholas NS

The family fun Treasure Hunt was won by Jianan Hu, Jiahui Hu and Nan Xiang who were delighted to win €100 in Shop Local vouchers kindly sponsored by Dundalk Chamber.

As part of the celebrations for Customer Appreciation Day retailers in Dundalk had special offers and discounts in-store as a thank you to their loyal customers.

Martin McElligott of Dundalk BIDS said ‘We are delighted that Super Saturday 2018 was a great success, organising a day like this is a big undertaking and would not be possible without our partners and the generous sponsorship of Louth County Council, The Crafty Rock, Carlingford Adventure Centre and Bridge Street Studios and An Táin Arts Centre.
