Recorded history
1819–1907Francis Leopold McClintock

Born in Seatown Place, McClintock joined the Royal Navy as a young teenager and developed expertise in long-distance Arctic sledge travel. His 1857–1859 expedition in the Fox sought evidence of the missing Franklin expedition. Inuit testimony, material remains and a written record discovered by his officer William Hobson helped establish its fate. His work also included natural-history collecting and experiments with photography. Remembering the explorer accurately means acknowledging those collaborators and Indigenous knowledge, rather than attributing every discovery to a lone European adventurer.

A lasting legacy

A Dundalk life connected to polar exploration, scientific collections and the history of how evidence is gathered.
