Life along an older shoreline
Long before a town existed, people were making a living around the bay. The National Museum holds Later Mesolithic material excavated from a raised beach at Rockmarshall, on the Cooley side of Dundalk Bay. Stone tools place this coastal landscape within the story of Ireland’s hunter-gatherer communities. Rockmarshall is evidence for people in the wider district; it does not establish the founding date of Dundalk itself.↗1
Dundalk’s earliest chapter begins with the bay and its resources, before streets, kingdoms or the modern shoreline.
