The life
Molly Barton grew up near Dundalk in the household of railway engineer James Barton. After helping care for her father's younger children, she developed an international career as an artist and teacher. She studied in London and Rome, exhibited with the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Society of Women Artists, and travelled extensively. A journey through Mexico in 1909 led to watercolours, an exhibition and an illustrated book. Her career broadens Dundalk's creative history beyond its best-known men and beyond an exclusively local view of its artists.
A lasting legacy
Painting, teaching and travel writing connect her Dundalk upbringing to a wider history of women working in the arts.
