The place
St Nicholas' Church of Ireland is a layered building rather than a monument from a single moment. Its medieval fabric, later additions and distinctive copper spire make it a place to examine how a town repairs and reuses its architecture over centuries. The Irish Architectural Archive's dictionary records Francis Johnston's spire design in 1786. The parish's own heritage project adds another dimension through churchyard research and a virtual tour. Set back from the street, the church offers an immediate contrast to the commercial life around it.
