The life
Thomas Coulter was born into a farming family at Carnbeg and attended school in Dundalk before studying at Trinity College Dublin. His medical training took him to Mexican mining enterprises, while botanical collecting carried him through Mexico and California. Specimens sent home helped European science describe plants, including the giant-coned pine named for him. Back in Dublin, he helped consolidate Trinity's natural-history collections and establish its herbarium. His story links local education and a family library with travel, collecting and the global networks of nineteenth-century science.
A lasting legacy
