The life
Tom Sharkey's path from Mill Street led to life at sea and professional boxing in the United States. His career began in Honolulu in 1893 and brought contests with some of the leading heavyweights of the period. A controversial win over Bob Fitzsimmons in 1896 produced a disputed claim to a world title; it should not be retold as an uncontested championship. Sharkey returned to fight in Dundalk in 1897. His story brings migration, physical labour, spectacle and the commercial world of professional sport into the town's history.
