The place
Clarke Station is a place where heritage remains part of an ordinary journey. The town's first railway connection opened in 1849, but the main surviving station building is dated 1894. Its associated buildings show several phases of railway investment rather than a single construction campaign. Read it alongside the history of the Great Northern Railway works: the passenger gateway was one visible part of a much larger town of engineering, goods handling and skilled maintenance. Trains still connect Dundalk with places to the north and south.
