The place
Seatown's surviving tower belonged to a Franciscan friary. Its familiar 'castle' name can obscure that religious setting. Today, the contrast between a small remnant and the life of the surrounding streets invites a useful exercise in looking: what survives, what has disappeared, and what evidence would let us rebuild the picture? Treat the tower as a starting point for questions about the earlier town, rather than a licence to invent a complete medieval scene around it. The associated inventory provides an introduction to the documented fabric.
What survives, and why it matters
A rare above-ground reminder of Dundalk's medieval religious landscape within the modern centre.
