From Annagassan, County Louth, south of Dundalk; a wider-Louth sporting legacy.

1964

Olympic debut in the 800 metres at Tokyo

Annagassan-born Noel Carroll competed for Ireland at the Tokyo 1964 and Mexico City 1968 Olympics. His journey took him from manual work and the Irish Army to a scholarship at Villanova University, where he formed part of a world-record 4 × 880-yard relay team in 1964. Beyond racing, he helped found the Dublin Marathon and ran its first edition in 1980. His home village lies south of Dundalk, outside the BID district. A memorial seat in Annagassan remembers an athlete whose wider legacy helped many more people become runners.

A lasting connection.

A wider-Louth Olympian whose work helped turn distance running into a mass-participation event in Ireland.
