The life
Paddy Mallon represents a history of skill that famous buildings alone cannot tell. Born in Dublin Street, he served a demanding apprenticeship at the Great Northern Railway's Dundalk works during the Economic War. He progressed from fitter to foreman of the Erecting Shop, overseeing locomotive overhaul. His preserved collection now offers researchers a route into the railway's working life. Bringing Mallon into the story gives apprentices, tradespeople and workshop knowledge a place beside public figures: the railway depended on people who understood how to make and maintain things.
