The life
Tomás Mac Anna was born Thomas Francis McCann, the son of Dundalk's stationmaster. Local schooling encouraged his Irish-language fluency, while seeing Shakespeare performed in the Town Hall helped kindle his love of theatre. He worked in the town library and amateur drama before joining Customs and Excise, then the Abbey. As director and designer he championed Irish-language work, experimented with theatrical form and brought major productions to the stage. His production of Borstal Boy reached Broadway in 1970, where the play won a Tony Award.
