The sporting story
From Mill Street to the heavyweight rings of America, Tom Sharkey's life followed the routes of seafaring and migration. His professional career began in Honolulu in 1893 and brought contests with Jim Corbett, Bob Fitzsimmons and Jim Jeffries. The 1899 Jeffries contest lasted 25 rounds and became an early landmark of filmed boxing. Sharkey's earlier 1896 victory over Fitzsimmons produced a disputed title claim, rather than an uncontested world championship. He returned to fight in Dundalk in 1897, bringing a remarkable international sporting story back to his home town.
A lasting connection.
His story links Dundalk's maritime and working lives with the emergence of international professional sport.
