Brigid, Faughart and a living legacy
Faughart, north of Dundalk, is traditionally celebrated as Brigid’s birthplace. Its well, graveyard, church ruins and devotional stations bring together generations of pilgrimage. The place’s importance continues today, but the surviving church is medieval rather than a building from Brigid’s lifetime. Historical care makes this layered landscape more interesting: people have returned to it and given it meaning over many centuries.↗1
Brigid links the area’s sacred landscape with women’s leadership, pilgrimage and the modern public culture of Dundalk.
