c.1236 · Rohesia de Verdun
A woman who built for power
Castle Roche rises from a rocky promontory north-west of Dundalk. Its commanding position speaks of landholding and frontier power. The castle is traditionally dated to 1236 and associated with Rohesia, also written Roesia, de Verdun, who inherited extensive estates and managed them after her husband’s death. The OPW considers that her son John probably completed it. The building’s history therefore includes a powerful female patron and more than one construction phase.↗1
Rohesia gives the region a remarkable medieval woman’s story, connecting architecture, inheritance, authority and the making of legend.
