September–November 1689 · Williamite War
The camp where an army stalled
In autumn 1689 Schomberg’s Williamite army halted at Dundalk, facing the forces of James II. Poor supplies, inexperienced troops and sickness undermined the campaign. The army eventually withdrew to northern winter quarters. Disease made this episode disastrous even without the decisive battle its commanders had expected, showing how weather, shelter, food and health could determine a campaign as much as military tactics.↗1↗2
A surviving map and military accounts connect Dundalk’s river crossing and landscape to a major European dynastic conflict.
